Researchers from INESC Coimbra are leading the development of an innovative system that uses drones and artificial intelligence to detect and map marine litter on Portuguese beaches.
The project, recently featured on SIC Notícias, applies low-cost drones and advanced image analysis to automatically identify and classify waste. The goal is to support faster and more effective cleanup operations, contributing to the global fight against plastic pollution.
UAS4Litter combines drone-based environmental monitoring with AI to detect and classify marine litter on coastal areas. This project has drawn international interest and is now being adapted for use in Japan through collaboration with the Japanese Ministry of the Environment has already shared here.
